Politics isn’t a bad thing, it’s a bridge to influence

Most people view office politics negatively, as a game to avoid, filled with manipulation, hidden agendas, and uncomfortable compromises. But what if there were another perspective?

The original meaning of politics comes from the Greek word "politikos," referring to matters "for the community." It was never about self-interest but rather about service, understanding, and collaboration.

Indeed true influence aligns closely with this original meaning; it isn't about power or dominance, but vulnerability and openness. It’s about having the courage to say, “I don’t know,” genuinely asking others what they think, openly sharing what matters most to you, and sincerely listening to what matters to others.

I've seen firsthand how conversations shift from tense to transformative simply by saying, “Here’s what’s important to me. Can you share what's important to you?” Suddenly, what seemed like conflict becomes an opportunity to build deeper trust and stronger decisions.

Our own viewpoint isn't always right, nor is it the only one. Every perspective adds richness, depth, and strength to our decisions. Being “political,” in the best sense, means honoring these differences and finding alignment through them.

What would change if we approached office politics not as a game to avoid, but as an opportunity to connect, collaborate, and create something truly meaningful?

Self awareness questions:

  • What beliefs or assumptions do you hold about office politics that might be shaping your experience?

  • If you viewed office politics as an opportunity for meaningful connection and collaboration, what specific actions or conversations would shift for you?

  • How might embracing a more open and service-oriented approach to influence impact your leadership, relationships, and outcomes at work?
