Recently, I read an article by Carly Anderson, MCC, a Master Certified Coach. Her thoughts made me reflect on the concept of space in our lives.

Imagine a night sky above a moonlit ocean, its vastness filled with stars and clouds. This scene often evokes feelings of wonder and awe. The sky changes constantly – the clouds move, the moon waxes and wanes – and this brings a sense of presence and curiosity. This is how Carly begins her piece.

Gazing at the night sky, we find ourselves in a state of curiosity, similar to the uncertainty we face in understanding others. This is about respecting and valuing their uniqueness – their background, culture, and dreams. We can all cultivate this state. Being relaxed, curious, and present impacts others more positively than dominating conversations and leaving no room for silence.

Our presence in life, even if subconscious, matters. Others notice our speech, how we respond, and the space we allow them to express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

What exactly is space?

Carly explains that space means intentionally allowing silence, giving others room to think and feel. It’s about being present and recognizing when someone is processing, thus creating opportunities for deeper exploration.

The Importance of Outer Space

Space in our everyday lives is crucial. When we lack space, it leads to stress, anxiety, and decreased effectiveness. Our lives are often filled with too many tasks, meetings, family duties, deadlines, and professional demands. This overload often results in too little personal space. Creating 'open space' in our schedules can improve our well-being and productivity. This lack of space is often evident and might feel overwhelmed, struggling to prioritize or plan effectively.

The Significance of Inner Space

Despite our busy lives and commitments, it is possible to cultivate inner space. The presence we bring – whether it is hyperactive or relaxed and alert – significantly affects others.

By embracing the concept of space, concluded Carly, we can enhance our ability to connect with and support others, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of each individual's unique journey.

Questions for reflection

  • Where in your life do you feel the greatest need for space—outer or inner—and what would it give you?

  • How might your relationships or leadership change if you created more intentional silence and allowed others more room to think, feel, and process?

  • What kind of presence do you most want to bring into a conversation—and what’s currently getting in the way?
